When the Body Carries the Weight of a Year
For the person who has been through a genuinely hard stretch — grief, sustained pressure, a year that asked too much — and whose body is still carrying it long after the circumstances have changed.

The hard year ended. The job stabilised, or the loss became grief you could live with, or the crisis passed. And yet the body didn't quite get the memo. You're still tired in a way that sleep doesn't fix. Still reactive in a way that feels disproportionate to what's in front of you now. Still getting sick more than you should. The pressure is gone but the residue isn't.
This is not weakness or slow recovery. It is allostatic load — and understanding what it is changes what makes sense to do about it.
What allostatic load actually is
Allostasis is the body's process of maintaining stability through change — adjusting cortisol, heart rate, blood pressure, immune function, and dozens of other variables in response to what the environment demands. Under acute stress, these adjustments are appropriate and temporary. The stress response mobilises resources, the threat passes, recovery follows, and the body returns to baseline. This is the system working correctly.
Allostatic load is what accumulates when that recovery is repeatedly incomplete. When the stressors arrive faster than the body can resolve them. When the cortisol curve never quite returns to baseline before the next demand arrives. When sleep is disrupted enough that the overnight restorative processes that are supposed to clear the day's stress chemistry don't fully complete. Over months and years, the body's stress-response systems begin to show measurable change — elevated inflammatory markers, dysregulated cortisol curves, reduced heart rate variability, impaired immune function, altered glucose metabolism.
These are not metaphors. They are biomarkers — measurable in blood, saliva, and urine. Allostatic load is a real physiological state with a documented biological signature. The fatigue, the reactivity, the susceptibility to illness after a hard year are the body reporting its accumulated burden honestly.
Why rest alone doesn't resolve it
The most common advice for someone who is depleted after a hard period is to rest. Rest matters — but it often isn't sufficient, and understanding why explains the frustration of people who do take time off and still don't feel restored.
Rest removes the input — the ongoing stress demand. It does not automatically reverse the biological changes that accumulated stress produced. Chronically elevated cortisol has altered the HPA axis's regulatory patterns. Sustained sympathetic nervous system activation has reduced vagal tone — the parasympathetic counterweight that governs rest, digestion, and the anti-inflammatory reflex. Inflammatory markers that rose under chronic stress don't fall simply because the stressor has ended. The body's regulatory systems need to be actively supported toward recovery, not just given absence of pressure.
This distinction matters because it shifts the question from "how much rest do I need" to "what does the body's regulatory capacity need to recover." Sleep quality, social connection, movement, and — where the ECS enters — the regulatory systems that govern how efficiently the body resolves stress chemistry all contribute to how quickly allostatic load is reduced.
Where the endocannabinoid system fits
Chronic stress depletes endocannabinoid tone — specifically reducing anandamide availability and reducing CB1 receptor sensitivity in the limbic system and HPA axis. The ECS is part of the mechanism that terminates cortisol responses and returns the body toward baseline after a stress event. When ECS tone is low, this termination is less efficient — each stress response takes longer to resolve, and the accumulated residue builds faster than it clears.
Recovery from high allostatic load involves, among other things, restoring the regulatory capacity that chronic stress depleted. The ECS is one layer of that regulatory capacity. Supporting it — through the CBD and CBG mechanisms documented throughout this archive — is not a shortcut or a substitute for the other dimensions of recovery. It is one input into a system that needs multiple inputs to recover properly.
The Cuttler (2024) human trial found that CBG reduced stress and anxiety meaningfully compared to placebo. Whether it specifically accelerates recovery from allostatic load accumulation — as distinct from reducing ongoing stress reactivity — has not been studied. The mechanism is coherent. The specific evidence for post-load recovery is not yet there.
On sustained depletion and clinical care
If the fatigue, reactivity, or physical symptoms following a hard year are significant and persistent, clinical assessment is worth pursuing. High allostatic load can present similarly to depression, thyroid dysfunction, autoimmune conditions, and other treatable states that benefit from specific evaluation. Understanding allostatic load as a framework is useful context — it is not a substitute for assessment by a clinician who can examine what is actually happening.
The body keeps an accurate account of what it has been through. The allostatic load that accumulates over a genuinely hard year is not imagined and it is not indefinite — but it resolves through active support of regulatory capacity, not simply through the passage of time.
